Health and Safety Policy — Commercial Waste Shoreditch
Commercial Waste Shoreditch is committed to protecting the health, safety and welfare of its employees, contractors, clients and the public in all activities related to commercial rubbish collection, waste management and commercial waste removal. This policy sets out the core principles that govern our operations across the service area, explaining responsibilities, risk control measures and continuous improvement processes. It applies to all staff involved in rubbish collection Shoreditch services, vehicle operations, site management and handling of general or hazardous waste.
Policy Statement
Our objective is to provide a safe working environment and to minimise risks through systematic risk assessment, training and safe systems of work. The organisation will comply with relevant health and safety legislation, industry best practice and recognised standards for commercial rubbish services. All personnel are expected to adopt a proactive approach to safety and to report hazards, near misses and incidents promptly so that corrective action can be taken.
This policy covers the operational activities of the rubbish company service area, including:
- Collection and loading of commercial waste, bulky waste and recyclable materials;
- Vehicle operation and maintenance for waste collection fleet;
- Segregation and handling of regulated or hazardous waste streams.
Risk assessment is central to safe operations. We undertake regular, documented assessments of all tasks including manual handling for refuse operatives, containment and packaging of waste, use of compaction equipment and route planning to reduce exposure to road and traffic hazards. Control measures follow the hierarchy of risk control: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment (PPE). Where elimination is not possible, systems and training aim to reduce likelihood and consequence of harm.
Roles and Responsibilities
Management will ensure resources are available for safe plant, adequate PPE, training and maintenance. Supervisors must ensure safe systems of work are implemented and that operatives receive pre-shift briefings. Each worker has a duty to co-operate fully, follow instructions and use provided controls including approved PPE. Contractors and temporary staff will be assessed prior to engagement and must comply with this policy as a condition of working with the company.
Training and competency are emphasised for all job roles. Induction training covers route safety, manual handling, hazardous substance awareness (COSHH principles), traffic management, vehicle loading and emergency procedures. Ongoing refresher training and toolbox talks are provided to reinforce safe practices in commercial waste removal and the collection of bulky or mixed commercial rubbish.
Operational controls include vehicle checks, secure loading, safe use of tail-lift and compaction systems, and clear site-specific rules for customer premises and recycling centres. We maintain a documented vehicle inspection regime and ensure timely maintenance to reduce breakdowns and mechanical hazards. Drivers and loaders are trained in safe access/egress, reversing risk controls and the use of visibility aids where fitted.
Hazardous and special wastes are identified, segregated and transported in accordance with regulatory requirements and best practice. Where hazardous materials are encountered, staff follow clear procedures to isolate the material, ensure containment and arrange for appropriate specialist removal. Waste transfer documentation and consignment notes are maintained so that hazardous materials are tracked from collection through to final treatment or disposal.
Incident reporting and investigation procedures provide a consistent approach to capturing lessons learned. All accidents, injuries and near misses are reported, recorded and investigated proportionately. Findings lead to changes in risk assessments, training or equipment. We set measurable health and safety objectives and undertake regular audits and inspections to monitor performance and drive continuous improvement in our waste management services.
Monitoring, Review and Communication: The policy is reviewed at least annually or when significant changes in operations, legislation or incident patterns occur. Performance indicators such as incident rates, audit findings and training completion rates are analysed by management. Health and safety information is communicated through noticeboards, briefings and documented procedures; employee involvement in safety meetings and consultation is encouraged.
Emergency Preparedness: Emergency plans are maintained, covering spillage response, fire, vehicle incidents and first aid provision. Key emergency controls include spill kits, fire extinguishers on vehicles and at depots, and trained first aiders. Regular exercises and drills ensure staff remain familiar with actions required in an emergency.
Commitment: The company leadership endorses this health and safety policy. Every person working within our commercial rubbish service area has a responsibility to act safely and challenge unsafe conditions. Together we aim to deliver efficient waste services while protecting people, property and the environment.
Signed on behalf of the company: Operations Director — policy effective from date of issue and published for all staff awareness.
